Verona Arena, the symbol of the city

The amphitheater was built with a particular stone - called Volpicella - and initially designed to host the gladiator fights. In fact, the name "Arena" (rena) means "sand" and derives from the sand that served as the backdrop and that had the task of absorbing the blood of the fighters.

The Arena was restored by the king of the Goths - Theodoric - and since 1600 has hosted various shows such as, for example, the hunting of bulls and riding competitions, until hosting - then - operas, thus becoming the largest lyric theater outdoors in the world.

As soon as you enter, you find yourself in a singular environment: the internal corridors, similar to long semi-dark galleries and built with thick walls to act as protection, lead to the belly of the monument and the mouths, positioned at regular distances, allow access to the cavea.

Arrived in the stands, the wide cavea of ​​elliptical steps - on three levels - envelops the stage and the spectators are immediately at his feet!

Only a small piece of the highest ring has survived, called "Ala": four arches decorated with cornices, which have become the most iconic image of the Arena.
