The Banquets of Santa Lucia

From December 10th to 13th Piazza Brà – as usual – hosts the Banquets of Santa Lucia.
To celebrate the feast of Saint Lucia, the city of Verona organizes the traditional market, where more than 300 pews of street vendors fill the square with sweets, typical products and gifts.

Legend has it that, around the thirteenth century, in the city had spread a serious and incurable eye disease that had mainly affected children. The inhabitants worried, then, had decided to ask for the grace of Saint Lucia, making a pilgrimage barefoot and barefoot, until the church of St. Agnes.
The children – however – because of the cold did not want to participate in the pilgrimage. The parents, then, promised them that if they had agreed to join the procession with bare feet, Saint Lucia would have found, on their return, many gifts.
The children accepted happy, the epidemic ended in a short time and, so, from that moment has remained the tradition of bringing children to church, December 13, to receive a blessing of the eyes.
Moreover – in the night between December 12th and 13th – each family leaves an empty plate that the Saint, accompanied by her faithful helper Castaldo and the donkey, provides to fill with sweets.
The Feast of Saint Lucia is, certainly, one of the most ancient Veronese traditions, heard and participated!
