Piazza Brà, a container of art and beauty

One of the most beautiful places to visit in the beautiful city of Verona is the central Piazza Brà - one of the largest in Europe - which houses some of its historical and appreciated monuments such as the Pentagon Tower, the statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, the Fountain of the Alps, the Palazzo Barbieri, the Gran Guardia, the Palazzo Malfatti Honorij and the Arena.

Porta Nuova Verona

As soon as you enter the city you can admire one of the architectural masterpieces of the '500: the white stone façade of Porta Nuova, which today serves as the main entrance to the city of Verona but - at the dawn - was built and inserted into a process of strategic renewal promoted by the Serenissima Republic of San Marco, ending with the replacement of the old Porta di Santa Croce.

Portoni della Brà

Continuing on the tree-lined avenue, we find the two city arches: the Portoni della Brà, initially built to connect the Castelvecchio and the Visconti Citadel but, unfortunately, today there is nothing left of the latter.

Torre Pentagona

Next to the embattled gates of the city, we can admire the Torre Pentagona, designed to defend Verona from the attacks of the enemies, which introduces us to the majestic square.

Monumento Vittorio Emanuele II

Here, we can immediately notice the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy and author of the unification of Italy.
And it was in his honor that the citizens built this monument in 1883, five years after his death.

Fontana delle Alpi

Behind it is the Fontana delle Alpi, called "struca limoni" by the people of Verona, for its particular form of squeezer citrus.
The Fountain rises among the nature of the enchanting ancient trees and it is tradition, for the fans of the football team of Verona, to take a dip in to celebrate the victories!

Palazzo Barbieri

In front of the fountain we can see the offices of the Municipality: Palazzo Barbieri.
This huge building, built in the neoclassical style between 1836 and 1848, recalls the ancient splendor of the Roman temples.

Gran Guardia

On the south side of Piazza Brà we note the Gran Guardia, a building designed by architect Domenico Curtoni and built on two floors with an attic that exceeds 85 meters in length, composed of thirteen rustic arches supporting the main floor that houses one of the historical academies of Verona: the Academy of Arms of Filotimi, with the aim of instructing young nobles to the art of chivalry, then closed with the arrival of Napoleon.

The Gran Guardia is also home to numerous important exhibitions, including international exhibitions, and film and music events.

Liston

To the north-west of Verona's central square is the Liston: a large sidewalk made of pink Valpolicella stone, which runs through the whole of Piazza Brà, which overlooks bars, restaurants and pizzerias.

Palazzo Malfatti Honorij

Continuing on, we see the Palazzo Malfatti Honorij, commissioned by Bonaventura degli Honorij and designed by architect Michele Sanmicheli, who was inspired by the Verona Arena.
The façade has a classical style and the portico has marked drafts and heads inserted in the keystones, which give the noble monument an unequaled elegance.

Arena di Verona

Finally, the entire Piazza Brà is dominated by the majestic Arena, the symbol of Verona and destination for many tourists who flock at any time of the year!

If you remember, we spoke about the Arena of Verona in our previous article, which you can find here!

Piazza Brà represents, therefore, the real container that contains some of the many beauties of the city able to make the hearts of those who come across its marvelous sight beat!

Moreover, Piazza Brà is really just a few minutes from Verona Easy Apartments!
