The Juliet's House

When you are in the beautiful Verona, one of the places to visit is definitely the Juliet’s House, a character made immortal by the famous Shakespeare tragedy.

The Juliet’s House- located in Via Cappello - is an ancient tower-house of medieval origin, dating back to 1200 and belonging to the Dal Cappello family, from which the Juliet's house takes its name: the Capuletis.
Before arriving in the courtyard, we pass through an entrance portico of the Gothic era, on whose walls appear thousands of graffiti in the form of hearts, dates, engagements of engaged couples who leave their sign of love towards their own half.
After reaching the courtyard of Juliet's House, it is possible to admire the building with its ancient exposed walls and the acute and trilobate arch windows of the late fifteenth century that evoke the charm of the medieval era.
Here, to attract the attention is - above all - the bronze statue of Juliet.
The sculptor Nereo Costantini of Verona created it in 1972, representing Juliet in adolescence, just as she was known by the public. The statue has been placed in the courtyard since the early seventies and it is customary to be photographed with a hand resting on the right breast of Juliet, a gesture that - according to legend - is a real "lucky charm"!
The bricks and the structure of Juliet's house refer to the romantic and chivalrous taste of that time. In particular, the famous balcony where the secret meetings between Romeo and Juliet took place, with furnishings that recall the costumes of the time and the tragedy of the two young people.
Every year, about two million tourists visit the courtyard and, most of them, enter the house especially to be able to look out from the famous balcony, where Juliet declared his love to Romeo.
The house is furnished with period furniture and beautiful paintings of the nineteenth century, through which some episodes of the famous Shakespeare tragedy are described.
In one of the rooms there is a desk, where visitors can write love messages to Juliet and insert them in the nearby mailbox.
Moreover, recently, a multimedia information point has been activated, where you can consult the most important news and images of the legend of the two lovers, both in the artistic field and in the places (all in Verona) dedicated to their memory, such as the Romeo's House and Juliet's Tomb.
On the top floor there is a fine collection of ceramics from the Middle Ages and the early Veronese Renaissance. A room was also created, in which you can see, in addition to drawings and costumes, the bed used in the famous film by Franco Zeffirelli, dedicated to the tragedy of the two young lovers.
From the courtyard you can also access the Terrace of Lovers - about 240 square meters - from which you can enjoy the picturesque view of the courtyard below, the house and its balcony.

Before leaving the Juliet’s House, do not forget to say hello to the protagonist of the famous work of Shakespeare, who has made us relive the essence of an ancient and fascinating era, with the evocative and mysterious places of the past.
